SugarSync by Sharpcast is an innovative online backup system that offers more than just a place to store your important data documents. It has a new feature that is causing people to talk and that is the ability to change a document on one computer and those changes will be stored online as well as be changed across several other devices.
You can take a photo of your child’s award ceremony with your camera phone and the pic will be stored online immediately and on any computer that you have installed SugarSync. This gives users the ability to have their documents on all computers while traveling, perfect for the travel photographer or the family that wants to ensure their vacation photos is protected from loss.
SugarSync may cost a bit more than other online backup storage system, but most believe the extra cost is well worth it. A 10GB plan is $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year; however, you can receive a 250GB plan for $49.99 per month or $499.00 per year. If you are not sure you wish to pay out that kind of money, you can try out SugarSync with a 45-day trial.
You will have to sign up and then download the software. The program is available for Mac OS X 10.4 or greater, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. The entire setup only takes a couple of minutes. You will then be able to automatically sync across all of your computers and back them up online. You will be able to choose between Full Sync and Lite Sync. Full Sync allows you to back up a folde4r online and across all the other devices you wish. Lite Sync creates a full backup online and will allow you access from other devices. The hard copy will not be saved on other devices as it is with the Full Sync.
You will be able to keep track of your documents, media, and photos quickly and easily with the folder, “Magic Briefcase”. As soon as you add a new item in the “Magic Briefcase”, it will automatically synchronize across the rest of your devices that you have included in the group. At the bottom on the screen, you will notice a gauge that will let you see how much storage you have left.
The most popular feature of SugarSync is the camera function. All photos that are taken using SugarSync will quickly be stored online and will be stored in all other computers you have synced, thus giving you the ability to safety store all photos without messing with Bluetooth or microSD card.

SugarSync seems to be an innovative service, and because of my initial experience I purchased 60Gb year subscription. But 5 months after having everything backed up and syched with SS started to try to reupload most of my photo files.
I’ve contacted SS support 3 months ago and they tell me the most crazy explanations to justify that they lost more than 2500 photos. I’ve contacted Mr. Finley, Senior Director of Operations at Sharpcast Inc (the company that created SugarSync) and he responded “Were very sorry for the problems you’ve experienced with the SugarSync service. We have identified the software issue that caused some of your files to be temporarily removed from our servers and then immediately re-uploaded. Additionally, we have worked with you to manually recover as much information as possible. However at this point; there is nothing more we can do.”
So if the files were “Temporarily removed” why they can’t put them back on my account? The files are definitively missing, and SugarSync backup service is not reliable as they promote, that’s the true.
Also if you check the terms of use page of SugarSync on section “13. Service Limitations” you can see that Sharpcast Inc not only doesn’t warrant their service availability also doesn’t commit to provide customer support!
In short I don’t recommend SugarSync at all.

Sorry to hear about your issues with SugarSync. It does show that as good as online backups are there is still a need for local backup.
