I wanted to take a few minutes and say Merry Christmas! I will be taking a few days off here after this afternoon and spending some quality time with my family and some extended family. Locate the Carbonite lock icon in your system tray. This icon will be located in the lower right hand corner of your screen.
Double-click the lock icon to open the Carbonite Info Center. Click on the Options tab to view or change your backup settings.
Choose either manual or automatic. By default Carbonite backs up your flies automatically any time your computer is connected to the Internet, but you can also change the settings to manual and start a backup whenever you wish. The manual option can be very useful for dial-up connections, since the automatic option could slow your connection down.
Review the list of files that will automatically be backed up when your computer is connected to the Internet. By default Carbonite backs up all your user files—if you wish to include any other files just check those files on the list.
Click the Set Options tab in the Carbonite Info Center to schedule specific times for your backups. Click the Backup Schedule tab and choose one of the following:
1. Update Backup Automatically – this is the option recommended by Carbonite, since it takes the guesswork out of backing up your files. With this option a new backup will be created within 10 minutes of your making a change to that file. This option provides optimal protection against data loss.
2. Update Backup at Specific Times – with this option the Carbonite online backup will run at a specific time each day. All files that have changed since the last backup will have a new backup file created.
3. Do Not Backup Between the Hours Of – this is a useful option if you have a slow Internet connection. With this option Carbonite will not run during the time period you specify.

In order to know which files have been backed up, you will notice small dots in various color depending on the type of file, document, or if the file is waiting to be backed up. If there is no dot, then the file has not been backed up and is not waiting for the backup process.

Restore
Restoring your files is just as simple as backing up your files. To start the restore process in Carbonite, just follow these simple steps:

Double-click on the Carbonite Backup Drive shortcut located on your computer desktop. Double-click the Backed Up Files icon to sse a lsst of all the files nad folders Carbonite has backed up. This window will be very similar in appearance to the familiar Windows Explorer window.
Locate the file or folder you wish to restore. Right-click on that file or folder and choose Restore from the menu. Carbonite will restore the file or folder to its original location.
You can restore the folder or file to a new location by right clicking and choosing Restore To from the list. You can then browse to the folder where you wish to restore the file. This can be a useful feature if you have multiple copies of files with the same names.
Search for additional files to restore by double-clicking on the lock icon. This icon is located in your system tray at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Wait for the Carbonite Info Center to open and click on the Restore Files tab. Click the Search for Files to Restore option to search for files. Enter the search criteria you want to use in that window and click OK when you are done.
Check the box next to the files you want to restore. The check box will appear next to each file in the search results window.
Confirm that you wish to restore the selected files, then click OK to begin the restoration process. You will see a pop-up message when the files have been successfully restored.
Restore all your files at once if your hard drive has crashed, or if you have changed computers and need to load your files on to the new hardware. To restore all your files, open the Restore Wizard by right-clicking on the lock icon and choosing Recover Mode.
Go to the Restore Files tab and choose Restore All of My Files. Confirm that you want to restore all of your files and click OK to begin the restoration process. Depending on how much data you have to restore, this process could take some time. You will see a pop-up message when the process is complete.

Other Features
Carbonite offers several mobile applications for easy access to your files. There are currently mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry. These mobile applications make it easy to get access to you backed up files to download them to your mobile device, open your files on your mobile device and easily share the file via email.

There are online backup services and then there is SpiderOak. SpiderOak is more than just an online backup service, they are an online backup service, a file sharing service and remote file access service rolled into one. Add to that, the fact that you can use SpiderOak on Windows, Mac and Linux machines and SpiderOak is poised to become a leader in online backup.

Security is first and foremost with SpiderOak. All data is encrypted locally on your computer before being sent up to the SpiderOak servers. Your data is so secure in fact that not even SpiderOak can gain access to your files or look at the file names. The “zero knowledge” policy with SpiderOak makes it very important that you do not lose or forget your password. SpiderOak cannot reset your password for you since it is used on your computer to encrypt the data before being sent to SpiderOak.

The SpiderOak itself is easy to use whether you are using a Windows computer, a Macintosh or a Linux machine. The software runs and behaves similarly on all platforms and is easy to use. To backup simply select the folders you want to backup and SpiderOak will do the rest. The software regularly scans your computer and the folders that you have selected for backup for changes and uploads those files. You can force a scan to occur and start a backup of changed files. There does not seem to be a way to schedule a backup to occur at a particular time. The closest I could find was a way to set how often the scan for changed files takes place.

SpiderOak has also made it easy to share files that you have already backed up. While some services offer file sharing many of them give you space for backup and storage/file sharing separately. With SpiderOak you can share files from your backed up files. It is a simple matter of clicking the Share tab on the software, creating a ShareId and creating a new Share Room. This is an excellent feature for those that want to share photos of the kids with friends and family without needing or copying the files to another server. Simply do your backup like normal and share the latest folder.

Users can also access all their backed up files over the web by simply logging in with your username and password on the SpiderOak website. From there you can easily access and download your files using your web browser. This give you access to downloading your files where ever you have Internet access.

The free version of SpiderOak offers 2gb for free is a great solution for those that just need to backup some important word processing files, spreadsheets and presentations. For larger backups you will need to subscribe either by the month or year. The price per month to backup 100gb of data is $10.00/month. It is $10.00 for every 100gb that you want to backup after that. While the price is a little higher than some other services you are able to backup up multiple computers with one account. You could easily backup your main desktop, the kids computer and your laptop all on one account while still backing up less than 100gb of data. Overall SpiderOak is a solid backup service perfect for home and business online backup needs.

I have been using Dropbox for over two years now to sync files between my laptop and my main desktop and I have to say that the beauty of Dropbox is how simple it is. Install it on the computers you want to sync files with and simply drag and drop the files and folders you want to sync between computers. Simplicity is a good thing, why make something complicated if it does not have to be.

After you download and install Dropbox on your computer you can create an account. To sync files between another computer simply download and install the appropriate version of Dropbox for that computer. For example I sync files between my Ubuntu Linux laptop and my Windows desktop. Once you have created your account with Dropbox, simply login to the same account on all the computers you want to sync. After the software is installed you will have a new folder on your computer called Dropbox. All the folders and files that are copied to that folder are synced to all the other computers. Those files are also available over the Internet using the Dropbox web interface.

Dropbox also makes it easy to allow public access to some of your files. Inside of your Dropbox folder there is a subfolder called Public. Any folder or file inside of the Public folder is exactly that, public and accessible to the world. Have a large document you need to send to a client or coworker. You can add it to the Public folder, copy the publicly accessible link and have them download the document. You could even host a simple website hosted entirely in your Drobox Public folder. For example I created a simple HTML file to show this review.

You can also share folders and files with people that are not inside of the public folder. You can create a shared folder and invite others users to collaborate with you on its contents. This makes Dropbox perfect for businesses allowing employees to work on the same documents from where ever they are.

Dropbox does have an iPhone and Android application available that you can use to access your files from your smartphone. Sync and upload functionality varies depending on the platform. The mobile web interface is accessible from many mobile devices. Mobile access makes it very easy to upload via the web the latest photo you have taken on your phone that you want to keep safe or any other document that you want to make sure you do not lose.

If you find you email files to yourself on a regular basis, carry a USB drive around, like to share photos with your friends and family and want to have access to your most important files from anywhere then Dropbox is a fantastic service and one you should check out. It will make the syncing of files between your computers so easy you will not know how you lived without Dropbox.
