SugarSync Updates Design

SugarSync has just launched an updated look to their website and a few changes to the desktop apps. If you visit the site now you will notice a brand new look featuring that great hummingbird. It is a nice refreshing look for SugarSync and I really like the favicon of the hummingbird.

The Windows and Mac applications have also had new menu tray icons, featuring of course, the new hummingbird. You can see examples of the new SugarSync menu tray icons below.

SugarSync 2012 Update Roundup

The SugarSync team has been busy in the New Year already with several new features here in 2012. They have announced updates to both the Android and iPhone/iPad apps and made enhancements to the public sharing of links for both free and paid SugarSync users.

SugarSync was the first app I knew of on Android that automatically synced your photos automatically from your Android device to your SugarSync account and your computers. Photos are only a part of the content you create on your Android device though, video is probably the second most common content you create. Getting those videos on your computer and backed up safely can be more time consuming than it should be. SugarSync has changed all of that now though with the ability to sync not just your photos from your Android device, but also your videos with AutoSync Video in the new SugarSync Android app. The new video sync only syncs when on wifi to make sure you do not go over any mobile bandwidth cap so no need to worry about using up your mobile data plan.

SugarSync also released a new iPhone/iPad app that will make uploaded photos from your iPhone/iPad easier and better. The best part is the new batch upload feature that allows you to select all the photos from your iPhone/iPad device that you want to upload and then tap upload and all the selected files will be uploaded. To make it even better it will be done in the background so you can go and tweet, play more Angry Birds, or do whatever else you want while SugarSync takes care of the hard work of uploading your photos.

Aside from mobile app updates, SugarSync has also updated their file sharing file size limits. Previously free users could only share files up to 25MB and paid users had a 2GB files size limit. Those limits have have been removed so people can share as large of file as they need to. Now those large home videos or large presentations can be shared with your friends and family. Public links still have bandwidth limits in place to prevent any kind of abuse. Free users have a bandwidth limit of 10GB and paid users 250GB, more than enough to share your files with friends and family.

SugarSync has been leading the way in the mobile apps with their ability to sync files from mobile devices to a SugarSync user account and their computers. It will be an interesting year to see how their apps continue to grow.

SugarSync on Kindle Fire

The Amazon Kindle Fire has been burning up sales since it’s release and gives people easy access to all the content available from Amazon. The Kindle Fire is an Android based tablet though making it possible for SugarSync to run on the new tablet so you can not only have access to all of the content available from Amazon but once you install SugarSync you can access all of your own content as well.

Since I am in Canada and can’t buy a Kindle Fire is there any Kindle Fire owners out there that have used SugarSync or any of the other backup mobile apps on their new Fire? Leave a comment and let us all know how you like your new tablet.

SugarSync for Outlook

For those of you that are still using Outlook (I know I still have to use Outlook at work) here is a great new plugin for you, SugarSync for Outlook. I know this will help a lot of people that need to send large file attachments that use Outlook and the SugarSync plugin is a free download. You might want to check it out if you use Outlook. Could save you a considerable amount of time.

Here is a video demonstrating the new plugin.

The only problem I see with this plugin is some corporate email systems are locked down pretty tight. I know of some corporate email systems that remove ALL links and attachments in email if the recipient is not a local user. Seems to me even this plugin would not help those users.

Perhaps we need a SugarSync for Gmail for the rest of us personal users.

SugarSync recently updated their Android app and I have to tell you it is what I hoped Dropbox for Android would have been like. The new SugarSync app will automatically sync your photos from your Android device to your SugarSync account. Take a photo on with your Android phone and it will automatically be synced to your desktop. Never worry about losing a photo again.

You can find the Android app in the Android Market or scan the QR code with your phone to install it.

This new feature alone could be a great reason to sign up for a free 5GB account if you have an Android device.

Upload by Email to SugarSync

SugarSync keeps making their online backup, storage and file synchronization service even better. Not long ago they started offering SugarSync for Business, now they have added the ability to upload files to your SugarSync account by simply emailing them to a special email address. The attached file is then scanned for viruses and stored in your SugarSnc account. It can also sync to your other computers that you have attached to that account as well. According to the TechCruch post there are some files that are not accepted, like executable files and batch files. It appears the images and other common office formats are accepted making it easy to automatically forward photos or files from your contacts to SugarSync and have them stored.

SugarSync has also added a new plan to their pricing lineup that I will need to add to the review. It is a 500GB plan that you can currently purchase for a special introductory price of $39.99/month or $399.99/year. That is like getting two months free by paying for a year in advance. A little more expensive that some other online backup services, but if you have multiple computers to backup and sync, or are looking for mobile access SugarSync could be the best service for you.
