SpiderOak Sign Up Process Moves to Web

Spideroak, known for their zero-knowledge privacy policy has made a change to how people sign up for their service. Previously when people signed up for SpiderOak they had to download and install the application and then create their account. Now though they have moved to a web based sign up process that is probably more familiar and more user friendly to most people since people commonly sign up for services through the websites than through applications.

While I have a basic understanding of how their security works to maintain zero-knowledge, it is interesting to read the SpiderOak blog post to learn more about how they have incorporated this new sign up process while still maintaining zero-knowledge. This new process should make it easier for people to sign up and help with their tracking, like with the refer a friend program.

I know others have had problem with my refer a friend link to get the extra space in the past, and perhaps this will help improve that.

SpiderOak has been teasing on Facebook and Twitter that they had a big announcement coming. Well they finally let the world in on their secret and it is a great opportunity for people get an extra 50GB of free space. Many services, like Dropbox and SugarSync, offer referral programs where if you refer a friend to the service in return you get some extra bonus space. Dropbox limits referrals to an extra 10GB of space. SugarSync claims there is no referral space limit. Previously SpiderOak had a limit of 10GB for a maximum of 12GB of free space.

SpiderOak is the latest online backup company to release a new iPhone app. According to the SpiderOak blog post it offers users the following features:

SpiderOak is not holding anything back in it’s latest round of press releases. Earlier they took aim at Dropbox, now they are going after online backup service Carbonite. There is no doubt that SpiderOak does offer an impressive set of features for the price and they make sure you know it in the press release. The question still remains if SpiderOak can gain enough momentum to take on Carbonite and it’s lead in the online backup marketplace.

It does not hurt though that SpiderOak has been offering some generous promotion codes lately and with a 2gb free trial SpiderOak could gain a larger market share quickly.
