I cannot even sign up for Backzup because I have used the same email address with other Livedrive resellers.

I first heard about the company Backzup shortly after Backify came crashing down. Their launch press release is dated November 23 which was exactly one week after Backify was closed down by Livedrive. I did not even bother to post their launch press release here but wanted to post this one since the founder of Backzup indirectly mentions Backify. There has been some suggestions that Backzup is related to Backify in the comments. That does not seem to be the case after reading this press release.

While Backzup does not appear to be Backify reborn, it clearly is a Livedrive reseller. I cannot even sign up for the service with my email address since I have signed up with other Livedrive resellers in the past. While the 512GB of free space is a tempting offer for many and it is a large amount of space, larger than many other services, you need to wonder how they can afford to offer such a large amount of storage for free? The old saying “if it sounds to good to be true it probably is” comes to mind.

I would advise people that before signing up for any of Livedrive resellers to please be sure to read the comments on the Livedrive review page. If you are going to store your data with Livedrive why not just sign up with Livedrive instead of a reseller. Then you can avoid some of the whole Backify mess from happening all over again.

This is cruel and can be threatening to the reputation of a company that is just launching. Despite these hardships, Backzup was able to win the love and trust of over 20,000 people due to its excellent service and world class customer support.”

iCloud Inc. Launches iCloudDrive For Business

I hestitated to post this news release, but after reading it I think it will provide some humor for the rest of the week. When you hear the word “iCloud” what company do you think of? If you said Apple you would be in the large majority of what people would say. But there is apparently another company called iCloud Inc. that now sells online backup. Do you think that will cause confusion in the marketplace? From what I can tell they appear to be another Livedrive reseller but I can’t confirm that and I am not willing to give them any of my money to find out.

Besides the fact that they seem to want to be confused with Apple’s iCloud, which will probably get them a cease and desist letter shortly, I found a couple other interesting things in their whois data alone. Their press release states they have been in business since 2000, but the whois data says the domain was created June 13, 2011. The announcement by Apple about iCloud happened on June 6, 2011. A little to much of a coincidence. The domain name was also bought using a proxy to keep the ownership data private, while that is not unheard of it is surprising since they have a contact information on the website. Granted when a business starts and when the domain name is registered do not always happen at the same time.

Advisory Notice from Livedrive Regarding Backify.com

Got an interesting email this morning from Livedrive regarding one of their now former resellers, Backify. Backify made a splash roughly a month ago when they opened the doors and offered users 512GB of space for free. They promptly ended that promotion stating in another press release that they had 50,000 users signup. At that time it looked like all the free users would keep their free space, but that appears to no longer be true.

According to the email from Livedrive, Backify is no longer a reseller of the Livedrive service. If you do visit the Backify website today and click “Sign Up” you will be presented with a lightbox window telling you that “New accounts are temporarily unavailable.” Not sure how they are going to start creating accounts again in a few hours since they no longer have a service to sell, but that is what happens when someone tries to sign up.

Hopefully you were not relying on Backify for your main backup. I highly encourage you to try one of our top ten services. They are companies that we feel can be trusted to keep your data safe.

Another Livedrive reseller, BeeCloud, has released a news release today talking about their 512GB free online backup service. I can’t help but think they were a little jealous of Backify that came out on October 13 with the same offer, and then by October 18th stopped offering 512GB free accounts. Apparently Backify had roughly 50,000 free accounts created in those 4 days.

Wonder how long it will take BeeCloud to stop offering 512GB free accounts? If you missed out on Backify try BeeCloud, you might be able to get in before they close the free accounts down.

In a move that is really not a surprise to anyone I am sure, Backify is already going to stop offering free 512GB accounts. It only took them 4 days since their launch to announce they are closing off new 512GB accounts. The good news is if you are one of the 50,000 users that already have a free account you will get to keep your free account. I don’t know if that is a good thing or not.

Since Backify is a Livedrive reseller, I highly suggest you look at the Livedrive review for more information. Perhaps I would have more interest in this company if they had actually developed their own backup service instead of reselling Livedrive.

This is good news for another Livedrive reseller called BeeCloud who according to their website still offers 512GB free accounts.

However the customers who have already singed up for free accounts will continue to enjoy the free service for at least one year, maybe more. The company has already signed up 50,000 free users in 4 days since its launch on Thursday last week.

A spokesman for the company said today that the response Backify got was tremendous and totally unexpected. Despite a few glitches in the website on the first day of launch, 50,000 users have already signed up for a free account and hundreds have upgraded to paid accounts. Commenting on some blogs which were trying to spread FUD about the company, he said, “Just wait and watch, they will eat their own words pretty soon.”

He further said that the company had originally decided to offer the free accounts all through out the first month after launch. But with the huge response, the company has to cut short the offer. “The free accounts will be available till the end of day Tuesday, so if you still haven’t signed up, go ahead and get an account before we stop offering them,” he said. After the offer ends, the 512 GB accounts will be available for $2.99 a month if paid monthly, or $1.49 a month if paid in advance for one year. This price is still very cheap as compared to other services.

Backify is a startup company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It offers online backup and cloud storage services at exceptionally cheaper prices as compared with other companies in the industry.

Yesterday I mentioned that a new Livedrive reseller started up called Backify. They are offering a 512GB free account and have gotten some press because of it.

I had a few minutes today to do a Google search or two and added to the Livedrive resellers list on the Livedrive review page. In my searching I discovered that Backify was not the first Livedrive reseller to offer such a large free account. BeeCloud also offers a large free account. They have been around slightly longer so if you are looking for a company with the same features you might want to check them out as well.

Yesterday a new online backup service called Backify launched. While I saw the news release and some of the splash that was trying to be created I chose not to mention it yesterday and instead posted about SOS Online Backup launching their new Social backup service. When I checked my email this morning and the website I noticed not 1 or 2 comments about Backify waiting to be moderated but a whopping 25 comments!

If you are interested in Backify I can understand, they are offering a significant amount of space for free, 512GB to be exact. That sounds like a great deal but I am skeptical about such a great sounding offer. Considering how Mozy changed their pricing and packages this year away from unlimited plans this kind of offer sounds to good to be true.

After looking at the service deeper it is nothing more that a Livedrive reseller and offers similar features to Livedrive. If you are interested I have started a list of other Livedrive resellers on the Livedrive review page.

Oh, if you were wondering about the 25 comments, they were all from the same IP address and scattered across the site on different posts. They have since been marked as SPAM and deleted.

https://www.Backify.com launched an online backup service today. It offers 512 GB of free space for online backups, which can be upgraded to “Unlimited Space” for only $2.99 a month. Along with backups, it also provides a cloud storage service, similar to Dropbox.

Giving more details about the backup service, a company spokesman said that the service is very easy to use. “Create an account in less than 30 seconds and download the Backify software and install it. Once installed, the software automatically starts backing up your files to our safe and secure servers,” he said.

Explaining the briefcase (cloud storage) service, he said, “When you buy the briefcase, the Backify software adds a Network Drive to your My Computer or Mac Finder, where you can drag and drop files. Install Backify software on all your computers and share and sync files between them. Access your files from anywhere, in a browser or on your mobile. Share a file/folder with your friends or Public, accessible from any browser.”

Though none of the services offered by Backify (online backup and cloud storage) are new technology, however, the prices at which Backify offers them are totally unheard of. Backblaze, one of the leaders in the online backup market, offers an unlimited plan for $5.00 a month. However, 95% of computer users will never use more than about 300 GB of space for backups, and therefore can use the Backify’s free 512 GB plan. If they need more space, they can always go unlimited with only $2.99 a month which is 40% cheaper than Backblaze.

Similarly, the market leader in cloud storage, Dropbox.com charges $10.00/month for 50 GB of space. Whereas, Backify is offering 512 GB of cloud storage for only $4.99/month. Power users can buy upto 2TB of cloud storage space for only $9.99/month. Similar to Dropbox, Backify has mobile apps, which can be used to stream music, movies or view/edit documents.

Backify Internet Ltd is a Vancouver, British Columbia based startup company. The company is self-funded by founder Tarandeep Gill, a Georgia Tech graduate.

Zovo Online Backup Launched

I have been pretty busy lately and have not had a chance to talk about the fact that Zovo online backup launched. I mentioned them previously when they were creating some buzz on Twitter by offering free accounts. I had received an invitation for a free account but unfortunately was away when the invites came out and missed out on signing up. If you were like me and missed out or want to give Zovo online backup a try there is still a way to get a free account, just check out their zovo social sign up page and agree to ~~spam~~ invite three of your Facebook friends and you can have a free account.

Since I missed out on my free account invite I tried the social signup and was able to create a free zovo backup account. If you want a pro account you will have to pay.

Since I had a free account I thought I would take the service and software for a quick test. Downloading and installing was easy enough. It was pretty obvious that dispite all of the buzz that zovo created they are only just a Livedrive reseller. They have done a decent job of rebranding Livedrive but in the end they are simply reselling Livedrive.

If you are interested in learning more about Livedrive you can read my Livedrive review. If you need a free account you might want to look at zovo, but I would not rely on your free account for critical backups. Might be just the thing for students off to college and university in the fall.

I might still do a full review of zovo at some point, but since they are a Livedrive reseller I will be looking at other non-reseller services first. Below are some screenshots of zovo when I installed it.

Noticed on Twitter that there is a new online backup company starting to create a little buzz before launch. Don’t know much yet, their name is Zovo, and their website states:

Livedrive Price Increase

Looks like 2011 is turning out to the be the year of price increases for online backup services. First was Mozy, then Carbonite and now it looks like Livedrive will be increasing their prices as well. No word on what the new prices will be but this would be a good time to sign up for Livedrive if were thinking about it before the price increase does happen.

Current prices for Livedrive backup are $6.95 / month or $66.53 / year or the package deal of backup and briefcase are $16.95 / month or $170.53 / year. Once I find out the price increase I will post about it again.

It is interesting to notice that both Carbonite and Livedrive are not raising prices for existing customers, unlike Mozy who raised prices across the board for everyone, hitting some users with huge jumps. Nice to see Carbonite and Livedrive respecting their existing customers.
